In August 2016 I joined RedPod Studios at The Clay Factory, near Ivybridge, South Dartmoor. My monoprint workshop The Big Roll was an invitation to local people to explore making in the big factory space at our launch event.
I worked at RedPod for two years until January 2019, when I relocated to Bristol. The Clay Factory is an inspiring place to experiment, upscale, test work and collaborate. Below is my project from summer 2018 to transform the building's reception and improve the working environment.

Redpod Love 2018
A six-month project created and delivered by me (with amazing support from other tenants and staff).
Aim: to transform the reception of The Clay Factory for artist residents, businesses and our many visitors who had trouble finding the door. See images of makeover below.

PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
January scoping: photography and digital designs for makeover uploaded via FB group and email to landlord; part of my commitment to 'put in'. February to May preparing: tenant awareness and design discussions, costing; FB campaign for volunteers; much face-to-face; sourcing materials. June making: 3 days, 10 volunteers, transformation; supported by people from 8 of the 12 businesses in The Clay Factory (including chef William). August updating: planting is beautiful; people are using the cleaned, repaired walls to eat lunch, chat with colleagues and make calls. Reception staff love the outlook. Many messages of thanks for the uplift. It worked! |
November developing: updating a planter for the World Aids Day event (1 December) by sourcing local sponsorship from the nearby garden centre for red flowers. Our landlord, The Eddystone Trust, is a charity promoting AIDS awareness and sexual health among young people.
Total cost of £300: for materials, plus food costs to cook up a feast for hungry makeover team on Saturday lunchtime. People powered. |
